Local trails writer earns top honors from statewide park association

Readers of the Oakland Press know Jonathan Schechter's love of the outdoors through his Sunday column and online blog. Schechter is an explorer by nature, and invites residents to share his love of hiking on the trails of Oakland County's 910 square miles.

His contributions haven't gone unnoticed. Schechter, a Brandon resident, will receive the Michigan Recreation and Park Association's 2010 Media Advocate Award.

"Jonathan’s folksy writing style educates readers about the outdoors and entices them to see for themselves what makes Michigan wonderful," MRPA President Sue Wells said.

Schechter is employed as an emergency room paramedic at St. John Macomb-Oakland and is an on-call paramedic for the Brandon Fire Department. Schechter also does all the photography for his “Earth’s Almanac” blog on The Oakland Press website that reaches more than 400,000 unique on-line readers monthly. Additionally, he writes outdoor safety and first aid features for Woods N' Water News, a monthly Michigan fishing/hunting/outdoors newsmagazine.
