Royal Oak may help lead trend in outdoor dining

Everyone loves a patio in the summer and Royal Oak restaurants seem to be listening.

Three restaurants in downtown Royal Oak likely will have outdoor seating added or expanded this summer after the city and state give approvals expected in June.

Adding outdoor dining is a trend that many downtowns are encouraging to provide more atmosphere as they compete with chain restaurants and those located in malls, according to city and county planners.

In Royal Oak, Peking House restaurant could have sidewalk seating in place as soon as the start of summer — on June 21, Royal Oak City Attorney Dave Gillam said. It will probably take a month or two longer for the Oxford Inn to add its outdoor seating because that business still must gain state approval, and longer also for Memphis Smoke because its owners plan to build an expansion to their existing outdoor seating that’s perches two stories over Main Street, Gillam said this week.
