Update from the Wayne County Neighborhood Stabilization Program

As part of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act, the federal department of Housing and Urban Development awarded Wayne County nearly $26 million in Neighborhood Stabilization funds to help revitalize areas of the County hardest hit by the economic downturn. Wayne County's Community Development Division, housed within Wayne County's Economic Development Growth Engine (EDGE) spent 2009 identifying projects and creating an implementation plan to ensure NSP funds reached County neighborhoods with the greatest need.

As of December 2009, nearly 100% of NSP-eligible projects had been identified. Recently, the County decided to revise its Substantial Amendment (which must be approved by HUD in order to proceed with the obligation of funds) to include targeted demolition of blighted structures and redevelopment projects within the City of Detroit. Working with the City of Detroit and local nonprofits, Wayne County plans to obligate $9,150,000 to this effort with the goal of making neighborhoods safer for Detroit residents.

Below are two charts that show how Wayne County plans to use its total NSP allocation and the County's progress in obligating those funds.
